Valle dei Templi

since 1997 it has been registered on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The largest archaeological site in the world extending over 1300 hectares and most famous in Sicily dates back to the Hellenic period. It corresponds to the monumental area of the ancient city of Akragas, characterised by the exceptional state of conservation and a series of important Doric temples. To be precise, ten temples dedicated to the gods of Magna Grecia.
Agrigento
  • 3h
Agrigento is a magnificent city of about 60,000 inhabitants located on two adjoining hills, the Girgenti hill and the Atenea cliff, located just four kilometres from the southern coast of the island. It is a thousand-year-old city that has changed four names in its history: Akagras for the Greeks, Agrigentum for the Romans, Kerkent for the Arabs and Girgenti for the Normans. Agrigento embodies its history, and its streets, alleys where Greek and Roman testimonies are scattered in every corner of this splendid city, the province of origin of two great Italian authors of the twentieth century, Luigi Pirandello and Leonardo Sciascia.
Scala dei Turchi
  • 2h
  • Admission ticket not included
La Scala is made up of Trubi, a marl with a characteristic pure white colour. This cliff with a singular appearance stands between two beaches of fine sand and has a wavy and irregular shape, with lines that are not harsh but gentle and rounded. To access it, proceed along the coast and climb up a slope resembling a large natural limestone staircase. Once you reach the top of the cliff, the visible landscape embraces the Agrigento coast up to Capo Rossello. Scala dei Turchi is a geologically known site also because it is possible to recognise in a very simple way the cyclicities linked to the variation of the orbital parameters. In particular, it is possible to correlate the variations of insolation with cycles of an average of 21,000 years and the variations of eccentricity of the orbit with cycles of an average of 100,000 years. This has made it possible to carry out datings with orders of error of more than thousands of years
