Once known as the Sow and Piglets, they were renamed for tourism purposes and despite the name, there have never been twelve—only nine at the start of the 21st century, with two having collapsed due to erosion. Loch Ard Gorge

The gorge is named after the clipper ship Loch Ard, which tragically sank nearby in 1878, with only two survivors out of 54 on board.
