Overview

When you visit Hong Kong why not spend a day to visit the “Backyard” of the Hong Kong to see the natural beauty and fantastic scenic view of Sai Kung.

You can visit the two islands in the Sai Kung, Grass Island (Tap Mun), Sharp Island and Sai Kung Town in one day !

We will take the 1.5 hours ferry from the Ma Liu Shui Pier to Grass Island (Tap Mun) and 30 minutes ferry from Grass Island (Tap Mun) to Wong Shek Pier, also will take 15 minutes ferry to Sharp Island from Sai Kung Pier.

Sitting to the north of Sai Kung, this Grass Island with lush green meadows and crystal clear waters, its calming island atmosphere takes you away from the urban hustle and bustle with raging waves, urban cattle, and fishery rites.

The Sharp island is home to many different types of rock and a wide range of geopark attractions. Among the latter, a natural tombolo that emerges only at low tide and Hong Kong’s famous “rock stars” the Pineapple Bun Rocks are most stunning.

Activity itinerary

Tin Hau Temple (tap Mun)
  • 15m
Climb up a flight of stairs and be greeted by the Tin Hau Temple of Tap Mun and a broad sea view. The 400-year-old temple has an altar, and legend has it that it is connected by a hidden tunnel to Tap Mun Cave on the opposite shore of the island. You can try to listen for the sounds of the waves on the other side of the island! Also, be sure to take a detailed look at the century-old, exquisite ceramic sculptures on the temple’s roof.
Dragon View Pavilion
  • 15m
One of the most interesting geological features of Tap Mun (Grass Island) is the Dragon's Neck situated at the end of the informal trails north of the Hilltop Pavilion. This is a neat place to visit if you enjoy unique landscapes less frequented by visitors.
Hilltop Pavilion And Lookout (tap Mun)
  • 30m
Head up the steps beside the 400-year-old Tin Hau Temple and continue on the trail for about 200 metres to reach the best vantage point on the island — Tap Mun Sitting-out Area, which comprises the Hilltop Pavilion and an expansive meadow. Here, you can enjoy an unobstructed view of Mirs Bay and, on a clear day, as far as Dapeng Peninsula in Mainland China. Take your time to rest your feet; it’s relaxing to enjoy the cool sea breeze while watching boats sail by. When you’re ready, slowly make your way down to Pebble Beach, or head uphill to take the 200-step challenge up to Lung King (‘dragon view’) Pavilion.
Balanced Rock (tap Mun)
  • 30m
Continue on the path and find two neatly stacked rectangular rocks of around six metres high in the shape of the Chinese character ‘呂’(lui). It is also said to resemble a stupa, and together with the nearby Tap Mun Cave that opens up to Mirs Bay like a door, the island was thus named ‘Fat Tap Mun’ (‘Stupa Door’), which was later simplified into Tap Mun.
Tap Mun New Fishmen's Village
  • 30m
A bygone era of fishing communities survives on the high street of the village, where you can feel the breeze in front of a calm sea with skiffs and fish rafts or buy some Tap Mun sea produce from the street stalls.
UNESCO Geopark Volcano Discovery Centre
  • 15m
It shows the formation of Hong Kong’s unique hexagonal rock columns, as well as others around the world. It provides basic information about volcanology, volcano structure, volcanic eruptions and related geological knowledge, and introduces the features of the geosites in Hong Kong Geopark.
Sai Kung Promenade and Seafood Street
  • 1h 30m
Disembark from the ferry at Sai Kung Public Pier and stroll along the waterfront promenade nicknamed Seafood Street, and if the name hasn’t given it away already, you will soon see what is on the menu. Restaurant after restaurant features tanks brimming with fish, crabs, shrimps, shellfish and probably a few mystery creatures you have never seen before, while fishermen hawk their catches directly from their boats that float close by.
Hap Mun Beach
  • 1h
Excellent easy hike for families, some short climbs. Take ferry from Sai Kung pier to Hap Mun Beach, then follow trail for a nice 2km hike (35 mins) to Kiu Tsui pier , where Sharp island is. At low tide can walk across a tombolo to the island. Lots of ancient rocks and fossils. Great scenery on top of the hill. It’s Spring and hundreds of butterflies all along the trail, so beautiful!
Sharp Island Sand Levee
  • 1h
Sharp Island Geo Trail in the western part of the island begins at the pier and ends at an islet called Kiu Tau, passing through a beach and the tombolo along the way. Make a start at the Sharp Island Pier. A few steps to the left is a beach with adequate public facilities, while natural outcrops can be found on the right. These outcrops are mainly volcanic rocks occurring through migmatisation of volcanic ash, lapillus and lava. The conjoining link to the tombolo at the end of the beach is strewn with huge boulders mostly composed of rhyolite and granite (quartz monzonite). Manifesting extraordinary cracks, the granite boulders resemble Hong Kong’s iconic snack ― pineapple bun. Fittingly, these boulders have earned the name Pineapple Bun Rocks. When the tombolo emerges at low tide, visitors can walk across to Kiu Tau and walk up to the highest point for a panoramic view of the tombolo, Sai Kung Inner Sea and Clearwater Bay Peninsula.
