The historical heritage of Isle-sur-la-Sorgue illustrates the importance of the city within the Comtat Venaissin in the 14th century. Coloured with greenery and water, this island town nestled at the foot of the Vaucluse plateau is criss-crossed by several canals fed by the Sorgue. In the past, inhabitants primarily lived off fishing (up to 15,000 crayfish per day!), while the large water wheels powered numerous silk factories in the 18th century, and later paper mills in the 19th century. Some wheels still turn, but now solely for the pleasure of passersby. Today, Isle-sur-la-Sorgue enjoys international renown due to the large number of antique dealers spread throughout the city (especially open on weekends) and the numerous art and painting galleries.
