Overview

Enter the world of Mitai Māori Village and embrace our history and culture. Watch our stories unfold through the dynamic scenes of our warriors paddling down Wai-o-Whiro stream, the melodious sounds of our instruments and entertainment from our performers including the haka. Satisfy your hunger with the traditional Māori Hangi and concluding your evening with a walk through our forest to see the ancient, fortified village learning the old ways of living and survival of our people and discover the natural resource Te Puna a Tuhoe, freshwater spring. The evening is not over until you glimpse the glow worms light up the banks of forest as the veil of darkness sets in.

Nau mai, haere mai, whakatau mai – come and experience our world…

Great experience. All staff very friendly and guide very knowledgeable. Dinner was excellent with plenty of food. Cultural show very informative. Slightly larger numbers on the tour than expected but still really enjoyed the evening. Easy to access from the town.

Cultural ceremony and dance program was very good and explained well. Lead guide who did the initial introduction, explanations of various activities, and told the group where to go next was frequently difficult to understand. Our dinner show group was just over 150 people and she frequently addressed the group as a whole even though we were spread out over long narrow paths. Involved very poorly lit uneven paths and stairs made of uneven natural rock. Had to concentrate on footing rather than surrounding artifacts and decorative adornment. It felt very much like we were being hearded like cattle from place to place. Completely missed their Glow Worms. Everyone we spoke with afterwards agreed the frequently mentioned glow worms were missed, largely due to the mass movement of the group and poor communication. It felt like we were rushed out at the end, kind of like 'this is the last group, get them out so we can go home" . Overall, worth the experience but smaller groups, better communication, and for the after dark groups, better path lighting.

The cultural show is fantastic. The dinner is good - better than expected for a large buffet style meal and included lots of options. We had ten kids ages 9-17 in our group and some of them didn't enjoy the experience as much as the adults (although some of the kids loved the show). We learned a lot about the Maori culture and it was a great addition to our otherwise action-packed/adventure vacation.

This is not how it’s pictured on the Viator site. We were taken to an ugly, low ceiling dark room that looked like an old elementary school lunch room. We were then put at a table where we were crammed shoulder to shoulder with others and we were so tight to a point of where it was so uncomfortable. The photos on the site make it look like it’s all outdoors but it’s not. We were so uncomfortable and miserable that we left within 15 minutes of arriving. It was a colossal waste of money. Want a real Māori experience? Then reserve time at the Whakarewarewa Living Maori Village and not this fake and awful place.

Great food Great show Learned a lot about culture and people were so nice! Drawback- dining room was freezing Afterwards we did tour of village. It was dark so couldn’t see anything including uneven path! They should do village in the light When one can see their footing very dangerous Also nothing in village was labeled so we didn’t know what we were looking at (used flashlights or would not have seen most of it) Paths could have been marked better too

Exactly as described. The food was better than most on these types of events. The guide was open to questions and great at explaining the culture.

This activity delivers as reads in the description, but be aware that you maybe sharing this experience with hundreds of people at one time. We did this activity mid March and there were were 200 to 300 people.

Awesome experience lots of information given about Māori culture. Food was delicious and in abundance. The walks through rain forest and evening glow worms and set up of homes their ancestors built was incredible. The entertainment was fun, colourful and truly informative and inspirational. 👍👏
