What you can expect

Discover the history of Porto, one of the oldest European centers and the second-largest city in Portugal. Resting on the Douro River, it is a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site. Hear stories from your guide that bring the city to life and don’t miss the chance to taste some locally made port wine.

Explore the banks of the Douro, the life artery of both the city and the Iberian Peninsula, as it flows from northern-central Spain to its outlet into the Atlantic Ocean. Drive along the storied streets and avenues with monuments that are sculpted in Romanesque, Neo-Classical, Gothic, and Baroque styles. Stop at the Clérigos Church, a Baroque relic from the 1700s, and marvel at its 248-foot (75.6-m) bell tower.

You then head to São Bento Railway Station, known for its blue and white azulejo tiles, as your guide explains how these panels illustrate scenes from Portugal’s history. Visit the Lello Bookshop, one of the oldest in the country, and admire its Art Nouveau façade bedecked by prominent Gothic features.

Your tour ends across the Douro at a traditional port wine cellar in the medieval city of Vila Nova de Gaia, where you taste a sweet red vintage as a local expert tell you about its production.
