The history of Regensburg is very rich and it is impossible to determine exactly when it was founded. It was first a Celtic settlement and later a Roman military camp. One of the city's most important monuments is St Peter's Cathedral, considered the pinnacle of southern German Gothic architecture. It was built in the cathedral square on the site of the original Romanesque basilica, of which only the Eselsturm tower remains.
