Perched on a picturesque hill overlooking the tranquil Danube, the ancient Melk Abbey is a testament to the grandeur of Austrian Baroque architecture. This 11th century Benedictine abbey, also known as Stift Melk, is a magnificent blend of art, religion and history that has enchanted visitors for centuries. The abbey has been rebuilt many times over the years and its current baroque appearance dates from 1702 to 1736. The abbey is a harmonious blend of intricate stucco, frescoes and rich gilded decoration that adorns its halls and chambers. The interior of the church is a visual symphony of light and colour, with the ceiling decorated with vibrant frescoes by Johann Michael Rottmayr depicting scenes from the life of Saint Benedict. The library, known as the "Pearl of the Baroque", houses an impressive collection of manuscripts, incunabula and prints, housed in magnificent wood-panelled shelves under a magnificent frescoed dome.

Situated on the picturesque banks of the Danube in the heart of Austria's Wachau Valley, the idyllic town of Dürnstein is famous for its medieval architecture, vineyard-covered hills and the legendary castle perched on the rocky hillside above the town. The castle, now a ruin, not only offers a fascinating insight into the region's medieval past, but also a magnificent panoramic view of the Danube valley. The castle is famous for the imprisonment of Richard the Lionheart, King of England, who was captured during the Third Crusade in the 12th century. The historic centre of Dürnstein is a charming maze of narrow cobbled streets, colourful facades and picturesque courtyards. Dürnstein is famous for its vineyards and wine production. Grüner Veltliner and Riesling are particularly well known.
