Langa de Duero
  • 1h
The tower of Langa de Duero is the first view offered to the traveller when approaching the population. The Langa Tower, popularly called Cube Castle, today used as an exhibition space, is a saddlery construction approximately twenty metres high. The current tower dates back to the 14th century, although a Muslim watchtower that was part of the existing surveillance network in the 11th century and a complementary fortification were most likely occupied in the past. In the 15th century, Henry Henry, Duke of Medina Sidonia and half-brother of Queen Eleanor of Navarre was locked up there on the orders of John II. This tower is the last vestige of the fortification that defended the bridge across the Douro River. To cross this 12-eyed bridge of approximately 100 metres in length is to recall a part of our history, in which the river was not only a source of life but also a frontier and a site of confrontation between Muslims and Christians.
Castillejo de Robledo
  • 1h
"When they left my daughters in Corpes' oak tree, with me they didn't want any part and lost my love: Give me my swords, when my sons-in-law are not! Verses 3156 et seq. CMC" Within the Camino del Cid is essential to visit Castillejo de Robledo, where most scholars place the affront suffered by the daughters of Cid at the hands of their husbands, the infants of Carrión. Rescued by their cousin, Félez Muñoz, the Cid’s daughters will rest in San Esteban de Gormaz until recovering from their wounds. This link with the Cidian legend contrasts with the uncertain origin of Castillejo de Robledo, which hardly allows to venture about its Islamic past until the 11th century. Later traces of history are still visible in his Romanesque church or castle.
San Esteban De Gormaz
  • 1h
To St. Stephen's the errand came that Minaya came because of her cousins both Verses 2845 et seq. CMC The medieval history of San Esteban de Gormaz, known in the 9th century as Castro Moro or Castro Muros according to accounts, is determined by its geostrategic importance, on the border of the Douro, next to Osma and Gormaz. In the Song of Mio Cid, St. Stephen is repeatedly quoted; this and the knowledge of the toponymy of the surroundings, although sometimes with geographical errors, has led some scholars to think that the anonymous poet may have lived or originated from this town. The truth is that St. Stephen and its surroundings play a very important role in the poem. It is precisely in this town, of which the Song says of its inhabitants that they are measured and prudent, that the daughters of the Cid are cared for after the affront suffered in the oak tree of Corpes by the infants of Carrión.
Gormaz
  • 1h
"They do not delay their lord's command, They ride fast, they ride day and night, came to Gormaz, a very strong castle, They really stayed there one night. Verses 2841 et seq. CMC" The caliphal fortress of Gormaz is one of the fundamental landmarks of this trip. El Cid was warden of this square as it possibly was also of Langa and Berlanga. Gormaz plays an essential role in our history: in the year 1081 the population living at the foot of the castle was attacked by a Muslim contingent, which provoked a harsh reprisal of the Cid in the form of an algara by the nearby Muslim territories belonging to the taifa of Toledo, then a strategic ally of King Alfonso VI. El Cid acted on his own behalf without seeking permission from his king, Alfonso. This fact and the harshness of the attack contributed to triggering the first banishment of the Cid, which took place that same year.
Miedes de Atienza
  • 1h
"Very satisfied was what you just dreamed of. The next morning they go riding, That day has a deadline, you know not one more; to the Sierra de Miedes they went camping. Verses 412 et seq. CMC" Protected by the Sierra de Pela, the lands of Miedes belonged in 1081 to the Muslim kingdom of Toledo, under the protection of the Castilian-Leonese king Alfonso VI who, in 1086, would incorporate them into his kingdom after the conquest of Toledo. It is through the Sierra de Pela where, according to the Song, the Cid descends with his men on the ninth day after leaving Vivar del Cid and enters Muslim territory. Close to Miedes is the "Peña del Cid", where local tradition places the place where Rodrigo Díaz camped on the imagined route of the Cantar.
Atienza
  • 1h
"To the left they leave Atienza, a very strong rock, The saw of Fears passed it then, by the Clear Mountains spur with vigour. Verses 2691 et seq. CMC" According to the Cantar, once they leave Castile and enter the Islamic territory of the taifa of Toledo, the host of the Cid rides by night not to be discovered, avoiding fortresses like that of Atienza, which it calls "a very strong rock". There is not much documentation about the town’s high-medieval past: at the beginning of the 11th century, the caliph of Córdoba, Sulayman, handed it over to Count Sancho Garcés along with other fortresses, such as Gormaz’s, in exchange for the count’s support in his struggle for the caliphate. At that time Atienza was already fortified (historian Al Razi states that as early as the tenth century Atienza was one of the strongest fortresses in the north of present-day Guadalajara), although the origins of the current castle date from the twelfth century.
