What you can expect

The wonders of a palm- and fern-filled World Heritage rainforest await at Kuranda's Rainforestation Nature Park. Explore the tropical surroundings by land and by water, get up close to native Aussie wildlife, and discover the culture of the region's indigenous inhabitants on this full-day outing.

From Cairns, make your way into the hills to Rainforestation Nature Park. Your immersion into the sights and sounds of the forest begins with a ride on an amphibious, World War II Duck vehicle. Spot lychees and pineapples at a tropical fruit orchard, and then splash into the water. Listen as your guide describes the plants and jungle critters around you, including scaly water dragons, powerful pythons, and tiny, freshwater turtles.

Back on land, you're greeted by indigenous guides and led to a rainforest amphitheatre for the Pamagirri Aboriginal Experience. Take a seat for a traditional dance, and then set out on a Dreamtime Walk to learn more about aboriginal heritage and beliefs. Try your hand at throwing a boomerang, and listen to the haunting drone of the didgeridoo.

At the Koala and Wildlife Park, meet and observe the unusual, exotic, and adorable animals that call the Land Down Under home. Watch kangaroos and wallabies hop about, cuddle a eucalyptus-munching koala, and watch for the flightless cassowary—little is known about this shy and elusive bird, even in Australia.

Finally, head to Kuranda—the village in the rainforest—where the afternoon is yours to scope out the handicrafts on offer in the markets and art galleries or visit attractions like the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary.
