Los Gemelos are located in the highlands of Santa Cruz Island, Galapagos Ecuador, on the Puerto Ayora road. The Twins are sinking craters formed by a series of eruptions when the islands were still active. The Twin craters are the only place on the island where the escalesia forest is located. Several trails have been created that lead to the two craters. In 1989 a circular path was opened around the largest crater, which passes through the interior of the escalesia forest, an excellent place to observe land birds, finches, woodpeckers, the beautiful vermillion flycatcher, among many other species of birds. Tourists are prohibited from eating fruits on this site, the seeds may fall by accident and could germinate. Nor are visitors allowed to get too close to the edge of the craters, since their edges can collapse. Nor are people allowed to throw stones or other objects inside the craters. In the rainy season, visitors are recommended to bring a jumper to protect themselves from the water. In the time of the garúa it may be cloudy early in the morning, but then it clears and when that happens, the weather becomes wonderful and pleasant.
