Overview

Known since the old times as a shepherd area, Marginimea Sibiului now stands as a very distinct ethnographic microregion. Visit two of the total of 18 villages comprised and see it's powerful dual character: Orthodox traditions and Saxon heritage. In Sibiel you will have the chance to visit a unique icon painted on glass museum. In Cristian, on the other hand, you will enter the gates of one of the no less than 200 fortified churches, still proudly telling the storey of the now almost disappeared Saxon community.
Walk the three main medieval squares of the city of Sibiu. Admire the local colourful architecture and find out why ''houses have eyes'' in this beautiful city. Find out about the the Governor of Transylvania, Samuel von Brukenthal and his connection to the city. Admire the mysterious Carpathian mountains from one of the tallest towers in Transylvania.

Sibiel

After 2 hours of car riding, before arriving to Sibiu, you will make a stop in the picturesque countryside of Marginimea Sibiului. The guide will tell you about the very specific culture melting pot of the area. Including under 20 small inhabitations, the micro region has developed, throughout the centuries, a very particular architectural, religious and ethnographical heritage. Chance to take a discovery walk. Opportunity to visit a very unusual peasant museum of naïve icons painted on glass.

Approaching Sibiu a bit more, but still remaining in Marginimea Sibiului, you will stop in a second village to admire one of the approximately 200 fortified medieval churches of Transylvania. Built by the Saxon communities, they all differ in size, structure and look. Chance to learn about the reasoning behind it. NB: From November to April, due to wintertime visiting restrictions, the visit of Cristian fortified church will be replaced with a visit to Alba Iulia Citadel.
