What you can expect

Strike gold in this interactive experience that explores the interesting cultivation of this sparkling mineral. Feel like you're drilling as you try the simulator, design gold jewellery with advanced technology, and learn about the mining industry as you take a look through the history of Waihi.

Conveniently located just across the street from the Cornish Pumphouse, the Gold Discovery Centre is a modern museum featuring state-of-the-art technology. Immerse yourself in the interactive exhibits as you dig into the rich culture behind the fascinating element that is the root of trade in the world.

Push hard against an air-leg drill that shakes your bones just like a real drill, lean on a plunger to trigger a simulated explosion down the gold mine, and then, for a change of pace, try to beat the shady dealer at a classic Australian game of Two-up.

Scroll through the history of Waihi as you try the dynamic models. You can witness what it was like to grow up in a gold town, then crank the handle to discover how the the power of horses, steam, and electricity forever altered the mining industry and the face of the town.

Next, visit the ghost theatre which features a colonial Waihi. Actors are brought to life by 3-D holograms in a storey inspired by real local characters. Get to know these charming towns-folk as they share their tales of love, war, and social strife.

Finish your day by making virtual gold jewellery, holding a real bar of pure gold, and experiencing the power and scale of modern gold production.
