What you can expect

Venture inside the Waitomo Glowworm Caves and enter a magical world shimmering with thousands of tiny glowworms. After discovering the incredible acoustic properties of the chamber known as the Cathedral, board a boat and glide beneath a dazzling ceiling illuminated by living lights.

Make your own way to Waitomo and meet your guide in the visitor centre at the cave entrance. As you set foot inside the top level, learn how geological activity 30 million years ago created the remarkable limestone formations. Marvel at the various features of the cavern, such as the Tomo, a 52-foot (16-m) shaft carved by an ancient waterfall.

Next, you descend into the Cathedral, the largest chamber in the caves. Discover how its shape, height, and rough surface have resulted in its unparalleled acoustics, as well as how many famous singers and choirs have come here to perform over the years. Get the chance to test out your own vocals, and be amazed by the pure, resonant sound.

Your journey culminates with a boat ride along an underwater river, which takes you into a cavern twinkling with a constellation of glowworms. As you gaze up in wonder at the starry ceiling, learn how these tiny, luminous insects belong to a species only found in New Zealand. Relish the sensation of floating slowly through the magical cavern before returning to the world of daylight.
