Oh, Auckland. You gorgeous ol’ harbour city, you. Between admiring the Sky Tower’s views and taking a daytrip out to Waiheke Island, there are plenty of things to do in this North Island city. But what about the things only the locals know about? We checked in with our well-travelled Facebook community to find out their best Auckland travel tips and they certainly delivered.
1. Manukau Heads Lighthouse
Located on the Awhitu Peninsula, the Manukau Heads Lighthouse has incredible views and is one of the few NZ lighthouses that are open to the public. Great tip, Gavin!
2. Stop by Smokys
If you’re hanging for a burger fix, Smokys in Manurewa is a hot favourite in town. Be prepared to queue up, though, ‘cause these burgers are in high demand. See you in the line, Tarnz!
3. Totara Park is just the beginning
Not just for hikers, Totara Park is great for mountain biking too, with over 12km of trails to explore. We’ll keep an eye out for those double shots next time we’re in Devonport, Liza!
4. Oakley Creek Waterfall
Not only is it pretty, but Oakley Creek is the only waterfall in the Auckland city area and just a 15-minute drive from the centre of town. Thanks for the tip, Nikita.
5. For the vegos
Vegetarians, rejoice! Sunflower Vegetarian Restaurant is the ONLY vegan and vegetarian Thai restaurant in New Zealand. You’ve gotta try the Pad Thai! We won’t go hungry with you around, Sapphire 😉
6. Get out of the city for the day
Not just for nature-lovers, Waiheke Island is home to vineyards, olive groves, and gorgeous beaches. And all just a 35-minute ferry trip from Auckland. Take us with you next time, Tracey.
7. Save it for a rainy day
Great for kids and adults alike, the Auckland Museum – Tamaki Paenga Hira in Auckland Domain is home to the world’s largest Maori and Pacific Island collections. Thanks for the rainy day tip, Donna!
8. Vintage railway
Take a journey back in time with a 15km steam train experience on the Glenbrook Vintage Railway. The scenery is just as impressive as the volunteers who operate and maintain the railway. Thanks for choo-choo-choosing to share this tip, Glenn.
