The staff were excellent. The bed had earwax stains on the blanket, and the ceiling had a large brown smear on it, not like a watermark, much darker and deliberately smeared. The bathroom looked nice, but when you ran the bath, the shower turned on, you could either have a bath with a shower running, or a shower going from hot to cold occasionally. Otherwise, it was a pleasant trip.

Very tired old hotel…. Amazing building from the outside. Could do with a £1m makeover. Plug hole in the sink blocked when we first turned up to the room, towel rail was hanging off the wall. The sink in the bathroom is too small to fill the kettle up which is provided in the room. Bedding not clean. The room had not been checked before it was let. Cheap price but Hou can see why.

A lovely old hotel and relatively clean but interaction with staff very poor. No discussion on check in about dinner or breakfast, parking is charged but they don’t record your vehicle number so not clear which car is for which room. Anyone can use the tablet to record reg number. Cheap, not so cheerful but stayed in far worse and most of them Britannia.

The bedroom was very small, with the toilet in a cupboard, but for the price at a 4 star hotel not unexpected. the hotel was a bit shabbier than I expected, and the layout downstairs a bit odd, but an old building so perhaps understandable (the entranceway/stair is stunning). We didn't test the spa. location great, and perhaps if we'd spent more the room would have been better.

Poor show hotels.com
Hotels dot com market this accommodation as providing wifi. No where did it say wifi in the room was chargeable. A con. And the service by the children working there terrible. Also, the pool was not available due to refurb. Also, not advertised in the listing. In all, very disappointed. If I’d known any of this, I would have booked elsewhere. I did not get what I expected when I booked.

Lovely location. Outrageous £5 parking fee for motorbikes even though 3 fitted into 1 car park space, Jobsworth day reception. Excellent evening receptionist. Paid for larger room. Dreadful rear facing cell. Evening receptionist allowed us to swap to garden view. Good and reasonably priced bar. Very noisy plumbing.

Decent quality hotel with some aspects to improve. It is obviously an old building but it is kept to a good standard. The additional surcharge for parking and WiFi (!) is not great in this age when internet is a basic commodity. Only one towel was provided for two guests. It is ok to encourage reuse of towels for sustainability, but come on, one towel per guest please. Breakfast not great for the surcharge of £12 but no much choice in walking distance. Overall, quality does not quite match the price.

We enjoyed our one night stay here. Quite a wait to check in as only one person on reception and having to deal with queries as well as booking people in. It was probably a ‘rush hour’ time though. Parking was good as wasn’t sure on spaces. It is very convenient for town as just across the road and everywhere walkable. Our room was small as standard double but I think on other sites it was classed as ‘cosy’ but was only 1 night so was fine for us. The en-suite looked recently refreshed and was very clean.

The bed was comfortable and the TV a good size. We stayed two nights and the room was not serviced. The pool cost £6 per session and parking £5 per day. So for £162.90 per night all you got was bed and very chaotic breakfast. The staff were not helpful or forthcoming. The clean sheets for next occupant were placed on the dirty floor before being put on the bed. It is possibly the worst hotel experience I have had.

A one night stay, handy for the centre of town and the Opera House. Polite and efficient check in. Big lobby with lots of seating and free, if slow, wi-fi. easy parking which costs £5 a day. Given the very reasonable room rates this is OK. Wi-fi in rooms only available for a fee, but again, the room rate can't include everything. That said, two of us each had a single room. Comfortable large bed. Tea tray with biscuits and bottles of water. No air con but window opens. Bathroom clean. Shower over bath; all worked well. Long term there may be a problem with the bathroom I used as no extractor fan and the window was locked shut, but at the moment, it's fine. This isn't a luxury hotel, but we were comfortable and the room rates are very competitive. I'll be happy to use it again.

Disappointing. The Palace Hotel is one of the monuments of Buxton in the mid-19th-century. It's a huge building, once very sure of itself and confident. Today it's in shabby condition and the owners - Britannia Hotels - seem to have no idea what to do with it. Once one steps back from the grand rooms at the front of the building, one finds oneself in a maze of ugly corridors, notably mostly have over a century of clumsy over-painting. What this building needs more than anything is having every painted surface scraped down to the bare wood, and years of wallpaper torn away. The carpets should go. Some architect or interior designer with a good eye - me? - should take it back to its core, see what's there, and then put together a plan for putting it back together again. Refurbishment would be expensive but, if carried out over a five-year period, could achieve a lot. The trouble is, the owners probably don't think that Buxton is worth it any longer, given that the town is in an economic decline. But someone has to bite the bullet. Some kind of inspired refurb, carried out alongside a redevelopment plan agreed with the Council and, maybe, English Heritage could be the start of a new lease of life. Until then, this is a sad, drab, apology for a one-time regional landmark.

A disappointing experience and an awful room.
The only entrance is via revolving doors the hidden alternative “accessible” entrance, which is not wheel chair accessible, has its own obstacle course. Getting into the hotel with a number of bags is a challenge. The public areas are impressive even though there is so much furniture it is difficult to move around. The front desk was ok and reasonably helpful, if there was someone there — not always the case. Having found my way through the labyrinth of airless corridors to my assigned room 22 and the key did not work, another trek back to reception for adifferent key card but that didn’t work either so they gave me room 23 instead. The room was abysmal, in the noisy service area amongst the store rooms, windowless and cramped. Good job I do not suffer from claustrophobia. The bed was comfortable enough but that could not make up for the absolutely dreadful room. No cell phone service in the room, so the only internet option was to buy their expensive “premium” service. When booking no indication given that the room was in the dungeons. I tried to get the room changed but they claimed to be full except for two other dungeon rooms which I declined. The breakfast was good but at £15 very expensive as was their coffee at £4 a cup. The wifi in the public areas was supposed to be free but the signal strength was so poor it was useless. I first stayed in the Palace over 40 years ago but never again.
