your own cottage, hear the ocean!

Come make Ka Hale Malie (the peaceful house) your own tropical cottage! Located 500 Ft from the ocean cliffs as the crow flies but not on the ocean. It is located in Hawaiian Paradise Park in Keaau, HI which is centrally located to visit Volcano, Pahoa, and the new black sand beaches of lower Puna (Pohoiki).

The little cottage has one bedroom with a queen bed that has sliding doors to the back lanai (porch) for you to enjoy your coffee or your candlelight dinner. A bathroom with a (purified) rainwater shower. A fully outfitted kitchen with gas stove, full refrigerator, built-in microwave, countertop convection oven/toaster, coffeemaker, blender and a variety of items for cooking. The attached living room has a vintage rattan couch and chair, a TV, Roku streaming device, a DVD player and sound bar, a library of over 50 DVDs (island themed!), and WIFI.

The house also has a front lanai (porch) with a table and chairs and a back lanai with an outdoor rattan couch, a table and chairs for dining, 2 bar stools and some "party lights" for nighttime ambiance. The best hang out spot may be the covered carport which has been transformed into an outdoor rec room/tiki bar complete with tables and chairs, a BBQ with charcoal and a charcoal starter (uses newspaper, not lighter fluid, and gets coals going fast), a cooler, a rug ETC.

The cottage is the only property on the 1/4 acre lot to give you privacy. Most days, and especially eves you can hear the crash of the waves on the cliffs, less than 500' away. Within a 5-10 minute walk is the beautiful coastline area where you can take a few chairs (I provide the portable ones in the bag), a few beverages and watch the sky and the ocean. During the humpback whale season you may see or hear whales. Rainbows over the ocean are a common event!

Mahalo (thank you) for considering Ka Hale Malie and should you decide to come the cottage will welcome you!

There are also a few masks, snorkels and fins; beach towels, paddle ball, frisbee, etc. for your use during your stay. If you want an island tour of any size/duration, I can recommend a great tour guide!

Ideal location
This is a great cottage. Small but very well equipped. Not a far walk to the cliffs where we saw 10 or so turtles swimming below. The other direction is a 3 mile hike to a secluded beach. Would highly recommend.

Nice, quiet, walkable location near lava cliffs, private back porch and yard
After staying in several VRBOs near enough to the highway to hear it 24/7, it was nice to get away to a quiet location (except for the young gals in kitty-corner house that partied all night but it didn't keep us up much; in our sixties, we have to admire their stamina). Comfortable bed, nice to have a private back porch and back yard with some decorations. Not far south to Pahoa with interesting food, shops, and people. Walk about six blocks to a stretch of lava cliffs popular with friendly locals and fisherman who sometime gather for music near sunset. A good neighborhood for walking. Never met Kim but she sent someone over when we needed help with some things.

Its all about the lanai!
Only slept and cooked in the house, every other minute was sitting on the lanai. First time we stayed at a place that was in a community environment that wasn't on the ocean. We really enjoyed how peaceful and inviting everyone we met were.

Good use of space, and great location!
Cute little cottage- loved the 3 lanai spaces. Nothing fancy, but comfortable. Bed was comfy, and the kitchen was adequate- we cooked all our meals there, saved some $$! Great neighborhood- quick walk to Paradise Cliffs, and amazing sunrises. No AC, but easy to keep the cottage a pleasant temp all day. Great base- and easy access to the highway, and points of interest. Highly recommend.

Perfect Location for Two
We came primarily to see the volcano erupting, and this small house was in a great spot. It's not too far from Hilo, and only about 45 minutes from the National Park. It's in a area of nice homes and the ocean is close - we could hear it - but we never had the chance to go to the beach. We especially loved the lanai! It was so comfortable and pretty. We ate all our breakfasts and dinners out there and this is where we spent most of our time when were were at the house. Even though it rained (it WAS the rainy season), the roof was wide enough to keep us dry even when it really poured. The kitchen is equipped with all that you need. The washer/dryer were great to have. It was one feature we looked for when booking, and we ended up really needing them on this trip. Many homes don't have them. If you stay during the rainy season you will need to bring umbrellas. Binoculars were available to take to the Park - we used them! I would suggest you bring a flashlight to use when going to see the volcano erupt at night. This helps when walking on the trails to the overlooks. Seeing the eruption at night should not be missed! We visited the park twice on our three-night stay. There are two quilt stores in the area - one in Hilo, and the other shop on Old Volcano Road. Both are named Kilauea Kreations. The one in Hilo is more fully stocked. We also visited two craft breweries in Hilo - a favorite activity! We would stay here again!

Location !
My husband and I stayed for 2 nights; it has a great location where you can take a short walk to view the ocean from the cliffs and has a bit of beach house vibe. Black sand beach and VNP are easy to get to from here among others! It’s a bit dated and eclectic with some cute decor. We especially enjoyed the back deck with some music and wine! Mahalo

Quaint little place
The property was as listed. A very quaint place in a great area. Centrally located for those who are off to adventure. Be sure to make sure you have everything before you leave as it is a bit of a drive into town. The house was perfect for my husband and I. A few more kitchen items would have been nice - the price was definitely budget-friendly.

Nice place but needs some upgrades and maintenance.
This property has a lot of potential but needs some upgrades and site maintenance. The inside of the property was clean and comfortable but some of the furniture could be upgraded. The yard could use some maintenance and cleanup such as mowing the grass, removing the junk under the back deck and cleaning up and trimming the vegetation. Also some of the outside patio furniture should be replaced or removed. That said, the place was comfortable and we enjoyed our stay.

Nice quiet cottage in a good location
This is a cute and nicely decorated cottage in a quiet and relaxing area. The cottage was equipped with everything one would need and is nicely decorated. . The cottage is in need of some upgrading with a shower head replacement and TV replacement. The cottage is small and has limited clothes storage space but we worked around this.

2 months on Beach Road
This cottage was a good fit for us in August and September, 2022--small, perfect size for two, and all the basics. It provided us with a good base for our explorations of the Big Island. The outdoor spaces were comfortable and the birds delightful (bird seed was provided). With the high cost of gas and food, having access to an equipped kitchen was a plus. The neighborhood was quiet and close to the ocean. A great area to walk and run. Both Stacey and host Kelly were helpful and available for questions. Thanks Ladies

Cute and nice like Nana's House
This was a really cute little place about 20 minutes from downtown Hilo and a block from the lava cliffs. Very quiet and remote neighborhood but a little difficult to find at night. Definitely well-loved and personalized. Well stocked with furniture and kitchen utensils. However, like Nana's house, there are some issues. The cleanliness and upkeep was lacking. The fan blades were covered in dust & grime, there was dirt under the sofa, and the dishes were greasy, and bedding smelled mildewy. The place smelled like stale cigarette smoke (even though the listing said no smoking indoors). Finally the temperature control/shower handle is substantially broken. The hot water wouldn't turn up the first night and the water was pretty tepid. Overall, great place for renters looking for a very quiet retreat.

Cute cottage along ocean cliffs
The cottage was cuter than pictured. Perfect for a couple. No issues finding the property or accessing it. Everything was here that we needed. We really enjoyed walking down the street to the ocean cliffs. Other than that, you do need to get in a car and travel at least 4 miles to anything else. It was about 40 minutes to volcano national park, but a very easy drive. Hilo was pretty close as well. Backyard was peaceful and relaxing. Great little property on this side of the island.

Cute & Comfy Bungalow
Me and my husband stayed here for 3 nights and it was the perfect spot. The interior was clean and had everything we needed. Having a washer was great and the clothesline almost got everything dry, but we did stick the clothes in the dryer for 15 minutes at the end. It was so nice having a full size fridge and the toaster oven came in handy several times. We used the cooler that was outside in the bar area even though it is broken. I don't think the owner is aware that it needs replaced - the zipper is unusable so you can't shut it. It has corroded itself. That was the only thing that was an issue, and the cooler still worked for a half day trip. Thank you for letting us enjoy your home!
