Flying into Phuket Airport doesn't involve your typical airport landing. If you managed to find yourself a window seat on the flight you'll be in for a treat as the view from the air is met with sparkling blue and green water as well as sandy beaches and lush greenery. The closer you get to landing the more you may start to wonder where the runway actually is because it seems as though you're heading into the water but by adopting some Thai nonchalance this experience shouldn't bother you one bit.

If you choose to stay within the vicinity of the airport you may be surprised to hear that there are two very nice beaches close by. One of those is Nai Yang which is amongst the better beaches on the island. Generally it is only popular with Thai locals but this is a blessing because it means the beach is kitted out with shade, food, cold drinks and is relatively unspoilt by tourism. Nai Yang also boasts a nice breeze and further out to sea you can take advantage of this by kite boarding for an afternoon. Another beach not too far from the airport is Mai Khao. Mai Khao is part of the Sirinat National Park and for this reason it manages to avoid the pitfalls of excessive tourism and development. The chances are you will not find an emptier beach on the whole island and we recommend you take advantage of it before it's too late.
