Book your Piraeus holiday
Holidays To Piraeus
History buffs unite…or relax on Piraeus holidays along the south coast of mainland Greece.
Located a short 12 km from Athens’ city centre, the city of Piraeus is home to the region’s busiest working harbour as well as the home of artifacts from several empires and civilisations that claimed Greece as their own. For reals—Piraeus really hit its stride during the 6th century BC, and since then travellers and tradespeople alike have come for the historical sites, world-class football matches and a stellar seaside cuisine scene. Dig it? Great! Now scoop up some of our awesome Piraeus deals and let’s get going.
Things to Do in Piraeus
Stack your Piraeus holiday with fun from sea level up. Take a walk through the Port of Piraeus, spotting sailboats from all over the world and centuries past. From the port, you’ll be a short walk from the peaceful square at the Church of Saint Nicholas and the Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, which houses artifacts gathered from the city’s multi-millennial history. Look back to the sea at the Piraeus Maritime Museum, complete with towering anchors sunk into the lawn. Top off your culture fix with an arvo at—OK, OK, history lesson over. It’s time for Piraeus’ second love—or first, depending on who you ask—football! Catch a match at Karaiskakis Stadium, site of the 2004 Olympic football competitions. No big deal. Finish off the arvo with a tour of the Set Design Museum Aravantinou Panos to pregame for your culture fix at the Piraeus Municipal Theatre.
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
Piraeus has shopping down to an art, because years of being a major European trading post has to count for something. To work your way through boutiques and one-of-a-kind finds, look near the Metro terminal at Akti Poseidonos, right in the harbour. You’ll find local shops on almost every street in town, so book one of our Piraeus packages to save for the splurge. Just in case.
Obviously you’ve got to try the fresh fish. The only problem will be deciding what kind and where to chow down, as the streets are lined with fine dining venues and shellfish shacks. Locals commute from Athens to sample the sea bass and crayfish dishes that come from Piraeus kitchens. Stay downtown for flashier digs or wander southeast of the port to quieter Hatzikyriakeio (aka Chatzikiriakio), a foodie neighbourhood tucked away from the fray.
After dinner, you could head to the city with one of our convenient Piraeus car rentals playing the role of the getaway car, or you could do as the local crowd does and catch a flick at the cinema before heading to a waterfront bar. The nightlife in Piraeus strikes a balance between karaoke and dance halls and chill jazz clubs—that’s the best kind of cocktail.
