Venice Holiday Packages
If you have a new sweetheart—or are just in the mood for beauty and romance—Venice holidays are sure to impress. Built on a series of canals, Venice features some of the most widely known architectural landmarks in Europe and beyond. And no, gossip-lovers, it’s not actually sinking.
Things to Do in Venice
Start your time in Venice at the iconic Piazza San Marco, the famous town square of this water-locked city. Take a tour of the world-famous St. Mark's Basilica, the intricate Roman-Catholic cathedral and prime example of Italo-Byzantine architecture from the 11th century. After you tour the basilica, wander along the Grand Canal and cross over the famous bridges that connect the two banks: the Rialto Bridge and the Ponte dell'Accademia. Afterwards, take a tour of the Doge's Palace to get a feel for how the elected Venetian nobility lived. If you're an art lover, visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection to see the heir's iconic collection of modern art and sculpture.
With Venice holiday packages, you may choose to fly into the airport in Marco Polo Airport (VCE) in the city or book a Milan package and make it a road trip, Italy style! Choose one of Wotif’s Milan car hire options to easily zip down to Venice, but keep in mind that Venice has no roads within the city proper. Don't fret: the water buses known as vaporettos can easily whisk you around the city!
Shopping, Dining & Nightlife
Shopping, of course, is an uber-important part of your Venice holiday. The city’s small streets pack in a ton of shops and markets, where you can find everything from fresh produce and fish to Italian wine and ornate Venetian masks perfect for the annual Carnevale di Venezia festival (or for startling your children). If you're interested in shiny things, head out to the nearby island of Burano, famous for its handcrafted Burano lace and Murano glass. If you stay in Milan for a night or two before you head to Venice, you’ll have even more opportunities for retail therapy, especially upscale brands.
Eating is one of the best parts about travelling to Italy—and this definitely extends to Venice. Visit the San Polo sestiere (Venetian neighbourhood) to eat favourites like Moleche (small green crabs), Baccala Mantecato (salted codfish) and Risi i Bisis (cooked rice with peas). You should also sample the traditional Venetian cocktail, the Aperol spritz, a perfect pre-dinner drink that’s served at many restaurants and bars along the banks of the canals.
Venice is often thought of as one of Italy's playgrounds, so prepare to have a good time if you're interested in investigating the nightlife there! Visit one of the nightclubs in Dorsoduro that stays open all night to dance, drink and experience some fine Italian revelry.
