Accommodation In Salvador
Brazil's first capital city simply abounds in fascinating heritage. In fact, this coastal city was once an important port for international trade, which resulted in the cultural diversity of the city and indeed the entire country. So book a room in one of our fabulous Salvador hotels and get ready to be immersed in Brazilian history, culture and adventure!
Things to Do
Largo do Pelourinho, in the middle of the city, is home to a number of UNESCO World Heritage listed buildings and churches and is a dream-come-true for history buffs. This town square was once a thriving slave market but is now known for its colourful colonial buildings and capoeira dance displays, where locals incorporate martial arts moves into their performances. If you're here just before Lent, you'll also have the chance to join in the Carnival celebrations, which some say rival Rio's Carnival in their grandeur.
Another fantastic place to learn about the city's history is at the Museu Afro-Brasileiros. Here you can see artefacts from all over Central America, as well as many from Africa, which were brought over while the slave trade was booming. You can also witness the African influence on Salvador's culture during a dance performance from the world-famous Bale Folclorico da Bahia dance troupe, who represent ancient deities and spirits through their unique performance art.
Despite the influence of Voodoo and other African religions, the Catholic Church still managed to thrive in the 1700s, much like it did in other South American cities. The most famous cathedral in Salvador is Sao Francisco Church and Convent, which is well worth a visit just to take a look at the interior, which is plated in about one tonne of gold leaf!
If you've had enough of history for a day, why not head to the National Zoo? Here you'll come face-to-face with the world's largest snakes, Brazilian Anacondas, plus lots of other native and international creatures.
Of course, no trip to Salvador would be complete without watching a soccer game. So check the events calendar, book a seat at the Fonte Nova Arena and get ready to scream your lungs out!
Getting Here
The airport in Salvador is less than 30 km from the city centre and you can easily get around by bus or train. The city itself is divided into an upper region and lower region, separated by steep hills. To travel between the two areas, you'll want to take the Elevador Lacerda, a 90 metre elevator which has been running for more than 140 years and is an iconic part of the local public transportation system.
