Stayed here a few times ( on business) but this was not a good visit . Ordered tea for meeting which lead to 3 seperate requests for teaspoon for tea, milk served in a teacup ( which didn’t pour) then offered a catering stainless milk jug ( large ) after asking 2 times. Continental breakfast offering is poor for £18 with ‘plastic cheese’ ham as only option to 2 pastries and one yoghurt. Toast wasn’t even included as i was told it was only an available with cooked. Room was great and the gentleman in reception was very courteous.

Hotel room was OK little outdated no usb ports and only 2 plugs available, spa area of hotel was outdated and felt more like a council run leisure centre, food was terrible over £20 for a burger which when came was like a Iceland frozen burger, breakfast not much better and service really slow, Staff in other parts of hotel really helpful just seemed under staffed for size of hotel. My wife even found shards of glass in her drink from the bar which cut her lip, bar staff informed and was hesitant about replacing drink.

Disappointing for a four star at 4* prices
For a four star it is looking a bit dated and the room we had was in need of updating and repair, (Room 317 - Broken sink). Great location if you are a golfer. The pool area was ok, nothing special, again looking tired, you only get a robe if you are having a treatment. Evening meal was nice, but restaurant was full of golfing parties and very loud. Breakfast was the biggest disappointment. Totally disorganised, a shortage of crockery and cutlery and ran out of food. You had to ask for everything and the staff were not very attentive. Their main focus is golf, there was people pushing golf trolleys around the hotel, even into their rooms. If you are on a golf deal when probably ok price, but for everyone else expensive for what it is.

The accessible room was fine except that the shower floor wet room was tiled so nervous when wet. Little supply of room biscuits/ milk/ tea etc. Service at breakfast was very slow and inefficiently done. Pool was fine to use, plenty of changing room space.

Would not recommend, noisy and poor service.
Rooms were noisy, we could everyone in the surrounding rooms. Breakfast service was appalling, no continental items left, no order taken for 30 minutes in which we left due to time restrictions. Pool wasn't child friendly and had a minimum depth of 1.2 meters in which the children couldn't touch the bottom of the pool and no flotation devices were present.

Great hotel
Fantastic stay. Upgrade was well worth it. The receptionist was extremely helpful to accommodate a safe room to store our bikes. Buffet breakfast was slightly lacking choice but service was great. Pool, sauna, steam rooms were excellent and clean but the roof could do with a paint if I was really critical. We would differently stay again and next time I’m different playing golf next time.

Lovely location. nice staff. The problem was that our room smelt musty and damp. The smell infiltrated into the bedsheets and our clothes. Also there was no air conditioning in the room and the window only opened a small amount. It was a very warm day so the room was hot. Unfortunately we arrived at the room late in the evening so it was too late to report and change room

Room was a good size and I thought the bed was a good size until I realised it was two single beds pushed together. Wifi was shockingly bad, but the worst part was the earwax we found on the bed. Wouldn’t go again

This the first time we had stayed at MacDonald Portal (although we have stayed at other MacDonald hotels). The hotel is in a fantastic location and the facilities were really good, and all the staff were very friendly. The check-in arrangements seemed a little chaotic (we had booked with Expedia, but some information had not been passed on to the hotel)? Matt on Reception was however particularly helpful. Breakfast was OK but could have been better. One particular concern was that cooked meats on the breakfast 'self-service' counter were left uncovered by an open door, and there were a number of flies around.... a bit off-putting to say the least. Generally happy with our stay (thanks mainly to the helpfulness of the staff) and I'm sure we'll be back.
