Lily Hill

Step back into a more peaceful time at this special home on the western shore of Lagoon Pond. Poised on a knoll overlooking the water, Lily Hill offers both serenity and sweeping views from impeccably maintained grounds. Enjoy a swim at your private beach morning, noon or night; rinse off in a hot water outdoor shower on the patio. Tie your sailboat or cruiser to the longest dock on the freshwater/saltwater lagoon, which opens to Vineyard Haven harbor; use the private, deep water mooring for your yacht. From the house, you watch the sunrise across the lagoon. From the end of the dock, with water lapping underneath, you can watch both the sunrise and sunset through the trees! Choose a unique spot to propose or hold an intimate wedding: Lily Hill's elegant gazebo overlooks the water; a classic arbor is set beneath the sweeping branches of one of the largest maple trees on the Island.

Surrounded by a variety of trees and flowering plants, this classic Vineyard shingle-and-stone home is within easy walking distance of town yet invisible from the road. Depending on the season, you’ll be greeted by pink hydrangeas, white-blossom Kousa dogwoods, or flashy orange Tiger lilies - the home’s namesake flower. The interior, with modern conveniences, is historic and elegant with large, curving windows in the wood-paneled great room, dining room, and downstairs master bedroom all overlooking the lagoon.

The bed in the primary suite has a luxury-rated DreamCloud mattress; the main bath includes a recently renovated and retiled shower. There are three Roku sets (44” in the main bedroom, 55” in the great room, and 32” in the dining room), and a new HVAC system. The upstairs sitting room was completely renovated in April 2022, with new awning windows and skylights. The great room has an entirely new furniture ensemble chosen by Lily Hill’s artist-owner for comfort, support and pleasing, lively colors and patterns. The kitchen features a new, top-rated wall oven and French door refrigerator. On the patio is a table for six near the grill overlooking the lagoon.

For many years, Lily Hill was the personal project of a locally renowned master gardener. The coffee-table book, Martha’s Vineyard Gardens and Houses, (Simon & Schuster), featured Lily Hill on the cover and in a 10-page spread. The text begins, “On the shore of Lagoon Pond sits this lovely rambling house… It is both rich and warm as well as light and airy.” Now, leave your everyday world behind and enjoy this remarkable retreat yourself.

What's nearby:
Vineyard Haven and the ferry terminal are less than a mile away. The Martha's Vineyard Museum is closer still and warrants a visit to learn about the island and its history. The harbor is full of boats – crowned by the offshore-moored, iconic topsail schooner, Shenandoah. Rent mopeds, bicycles, and even a center console power boat from 17’ to 22’. Take sailing lessons at the Vineyard Haven Yacht Club, spend an afternoon at Owen Park Beach, or head to the links at the Farm Neck Golf Club four miles southeast. Enjoy rolling along on rented bicycles for miles and miles of mostly flat terrain at the Manuel F. Corellus State Forest. (Interesting note: as a teenager, Lily Hill’s owner, an avid biker himself, was a volunteer who helped build these bike paths through the forest.) You can even rent a Jeep, long preferred as a mode of Vineyard locomotion by locals, at Sun ’n’ Fun, in nearby Oak Bluffs. Sample the many excellent Vineyard Haven dining options, including La Soffitta, Salvatore’s Ristorante Italiano, Rocco’s Pizzeria, Bobby B’s, the Little House Cafe - and, of course, the famous Black Dog Cafe, Bakery and Tavern. You might even spot a celebrity (or two or three) enjoying morning coffee at Mocha Mott’s, ice cream at Mad Martha’s, or perusing the latest releases at everyone’s favorite independent bookstore, Bunch of Grapes.

Great property but interior needs work
There were 2 issues I brought to Vacasa's attention the morning of our first day and each time I texted them they promised that the "local" team would get right back to me. Nobody got back to me until about noon on our 3rd day (our last full day) and then all she did was tell me the issues would be relayed to the owner and nothing could be done to fix them during my stay. Both issues could be easily handled by a handy man (a door knob that fell off from the back door to the patio, and some missing grout in the upstairs shower, which made that shower unusable), but the local manager offered no such solution. Also, my request for some additional soap bars and a box of Kleenex was ignored. I'm very disappointed with Vacasa's lack of follow-up and will try to avoid using properties managed by them in the future.

Disapointing stay at LilyHill
There is a great deal to be improved with what could be an incredible MV home! Here are a few major concerns and disappointments we had with this home: (1) there is a SIGNIFICANT leak in the ceiling and anytime the shower was used it was like it was raining in the living room. We were told to make sure the shower curtain was inside the tub. It was indeed inside every single time. Towards the end of the week we (all of us) just used the shower downstairs as we grew tired of putting out a bucket to catch the water. (2) The house SMELLED as though it had been shut and closed for a year. The musty, moldy damp smell would NOT dissipate! (3) The main level of the home was VERY damp all of the time. My daughter constantly asked, “why does everything feel so moist down here?" (4) The bedroom in the primary bedroom was AWFUL. The headboard is NOT connected to the bed and just leaning against the wall so anytime someone sits on the bed, lays on the bed, etc it clanks against the wall quite loudly. (5) The same bedroom, the bed is the most uncomfortable mattress I've ever experienced. There is a significant dip in the center of the bed so two people will immediately roll to the center whenever they lay down. I had to sleep on the couch most nights; (6) Minor annoyance, there is no place to put soap in the primary bedroom shower; (7) Any guidance and labels on the light switches so it was obvious what turns on what would've been great and which outlets were functioning and which were not

Beautiful location and views from the backyard. House needs significant fixes and maintenance. Most of the outlets didn’t work. Upstairs bathroom tub leaked into the downstairs living room ceiling.

This house is like a museum! It’s beautiful inside and out. The home wasn’t as private or secluded as I’d hoped. The owner lets the neighbors park their boat at the dock so they roll up on you while you’re sunbathing, looking in the window at you while you’re in bed and roam back and forth through the yard at all hours of the night. This was the only flaw for me and it’s a big one when you pay almost a 1000 a night to have privacy and peace.

Great Family Vacation
We have stayed at the property multiple times over the past 8 years and continue to return due to the great location and the fantastic beach with a dock for our boat right in the backyard. Being able to walk to downtown Vineyard Haven for a coffee in the morning and hang out all day on the beach is exactly how we want to spend our vacation. The house itself is comfortable and clean. The bathrooms definitely need some love and updates, but are clean and everything works just fine. The beds were comfortable, we all slept great, and the kitchen met our needs. We really enjoyed our stay and can't wait to return again!

We wanted to stay forever
I have never fallen so completely in love with a vrbo property as I did with the Lily Hill house. I spent the week just soaking in its rarified air, haunting the (for our party of 2) unused rooms upstairs, and pretending the beautiful lady in the stairwell portrait was my grandmother who had Surprise! bequeathed this lovely property to me. Likewise, the wood-paneled station wagon still parked in the garage, just waiting for the next trip to Garden or Yacht club. The house is a treasure trove of 50s-90s greatness. Ok in the kitchen there is a drawer full of flower vase frogs😍. If you do not know what these are, do not rent this property. Heiress or not, I felt I was the house’s doting caretaker for our wonderful week there. I fluffed cushions and replaced light bulbs and took great pains to keep things in their rightful places. I’m a decorator so I did change some things to their new (correct ) rightful places- nothing dramatic, just making it as it should be. Evenings on the patio were dreamy- stargazing after dinner, listening to various water sounds and bird calls. Heaven. And there were bunnies- nice ones, in the gazebo area. On our last full day- oh my heart- we were readying a canoe, loaned by an Island friend, for a fishing run when we received a visit from a pair of swans. I kid you not and have videos to prove it. They came right into our little private beach and preened and fussed and generally showed their superiority. We were humbly grateful for their royal consideration. I believe I curtsied; I know I felt like it. All in all, it was magical, splendid, altogether unforgettable. It was only after we returned home and, missing the place so, I googled the owner ( my new grandmother), and the property itself; and, lo and behold, I found that Lily Hill is featured in not one but two coffee table books about the Island’s lovely homes and specifically those with lovely grounds and gardens. Well I couldn’t order fast enough. Now I can visit in print the truly enchanting property I love- until our next trip to dear Lily Hill

Unsanitary and unsafe
This was absolutely the worst VRBO experience we have ever had. Vacasa should not be a company you work with. We only stayed at the property for about four hours due to the mold and uncleanliness of the home my husband began to have asthma attacks and I started experiencing really bad headaches. There was mice feces in several places in the home, nails sticking out of the walls, cobwebs everywhere, dirty carpets. I could go on and on. And just to make this clear the appliances are so outdated that the wires coming out of them are not to Code they have cloth sheeting. The washer was rusted, not enough towels provided, no washcloths, Beach towels which is stated in the listing, Not adequate utensils, Basically whoever made up the description of the property did just that they made it up the entire property was falsified on your documentation is how it was presented it was fraud plain and simple.

The house and location could not have been better - it was quiet, on the water with a great dock for swimming and boats and a quick walk into town. The only downside to the house was if you are interested in cooking, there are no essentials - salt, pepper, etc. so you need to purchase everything and no dish towels. Otherwise the house was fantastic; it was great for several family members to gather comfortably. The outdside and front entrance were gorgeous!

Spectacular property and VERY interesting home
My wife and I just completed a very enjoyable week at Lilly Hill. This is by no means a typical rental, so make sure you understand the home before booking. The property, on a five point scale, rates a TEN! The grounds are very well maintained (although shrubs at the front entrance to the home were badly overgrown), and the manicured lawn leads to a private beach and very long dock. The magnificent waterfront views and ready access to the lagoon were the reasons we booked, and we were not disappointed. We had a kayak delivered to the beach and used it multiple times daily. The home is certainly not a generic rental home. It is, instead, like a museum filled with antiques. Numerous grandfather (and smaller) clocks (none functioning), dressers, tables and paintings fill the home. You will find a 1970's Life Magazine with Caroline Kennedy on the cover in a bedroom. It is almost like the owner left unexpectedly (40 years ago) and asked you to house sit for a week. The kitchen cabinets and drawers are filled to the brim with "stuff" and many are quite disorganised. Remarkably, you will find Waterford crystal glasses mixed in with more generic glassware, and Wedgewood china and other beautiful plates and dishes predominate (fortunately, we did not break a single thing during the week!). Alas, this charmingly dated and elegant home contained a distinctly musty, old smell that dissipated after a day of airing out with windows opened. The kitchen appliances and washer/dryer were dated but functional. They will need to be replaced if and when the home is "refreshed." However, the deck table needs to be replaced now and the Weber grill was unusable for us, due to severe rusting of the metal grilling surface. The interior of the home was very clean upon arrival. Communication with the rental manager was fine. Finally, there was a serious misrepresentation on the website. Instead of 2.5 bathrooms, we found one full bathroom and 2 half bathrooms. When we called the manager we were told that attempts to repair a non-functional shower were unsuccessful due to Covid. She told me that previous renters were notified in advance, but we were never called about this beforehand. Had we been travelling with another adult couple this may have been a deal breaker. Also: *large, well-functioning fireplace in the living room *excellent outdoor shower on the side of the flagstone deck *excellent Wi-Fi

Great location. Sub par house
The location is prime if you want a water view and direct access to the lagoon for paddle boarding and kayaking as well as walking distance to VH town, which were our priorities. The house is beyond dated with many broken doors and lamps, only one shower with hot water and many electrical outlets that don’t work. The washer and dryer are in the garage, which was fine for us because we are all adults and didn’t need to do laundry more than once. The pictures of the furnishings speak for themselves. !! The kitchen dishes and flatware are gross frankly. We had great weather so spent most of our time outside and had a fun week on the island. Router works, tv works, beds are comfy. Owners: its time for an update.

No way for our guest to shower or bathe for five days!
Amazing view. But the inability for our guest to shower or bathe for the entire time since there was no shower or bath tub on the first floor as advertised was awful. He was recovering from a surgery and we booked the house since it advertised a full bath on the ground floor. We arrived to discover the shower was boarded up with drywall and there was a mold smell everywhere, We left a day early.
