History buffs will enjoy visiting Hulishan Fortress with its different architectural styles and lovely fountain. There are lots of lovely colonial buildings on the pretty island of Gulangyu and plenty of traditional buildings at the Xiamen University campus. For a spot of local culture, head to the splendid and large Nanputuo Temple and admire its numerous Buddha statues. Behind the temple you can climb the mountain, where you will see even more small Buddha images inside little gaps. The views from the top are excellent. There are great shopping opportunities both at day and in the evening, and a walk around the colourful and lively markets shows a different side of the city. There are lots of places to enjoy a great meal, and you should try some of the local specialities, which include Xiamen wonton soup, Xiamen glass noodles, peanut soup, crab porridge, and oyster omelette.
