Temples and museums

The famous Italian trader, Marco Polo, is said to have stayed for a long time in this city. There is a Memorial Hall in honour of the merchant with a random assortment of displays. Nearby is the lovely Tianning Temple. Another nice temple in the city is the Daming Temple.

There are several museums, including the Yangzhou Museum and Hanlinyuan Museum, which contains a spectacular tomb. You can also visit the Garden Tomb of Puhaddin, who is believed to be one of the Prophet Mohammed’s relatives, within the city mosque. The large Lu Shi Yan-shang Zhu-zhai is an elegant and grand mansion that previously belonged to one of the city’s rich salt traders.

There are several pretty gardens and parks around the city with some favourites being Ge Yuan, which is divided into different areas to reflect the seasons, and the stunning He Yuan with gorgeous landscaping, tea houses, caves, and great views. Around the Slender West Lake there is a nice park where you can relax and unwind. A local specialty to try is the Yangzhou fried rice, which contains egg, ham, prawns, mushrooms, carrots, peas, and spring onion.

Getting there and around

The high speed trains also make the vibrant Shanghai easy to get to. Getting around Yangzhou is easy, with frequent local buses, plenty of taxis, and lots of cycle rickshaws.
