Bicentennial Park
Take a break from the city and stroll through this calming natural space. Pass harbour views, native flora and sobering war monuments.
Bicentennial Park is one of Darwin’s most prized parklands. Come to this peaceful spot to take a relaxing walk or play a game of football on the grass.
The park was built in 1988 to celebrate 200 years since the First Fleet arrived from Britain. Find the park on the stretch of cliffs between Doctor’s Gully and Territory Parliament House, overlooking Darwin Harbour.
Walk along the tree-lined paths or sit on a bench under a palm tree and enjoy some peace and quiet with views of the manicured lawns. The park’s plant displays represent many native species, including the white siris and beauty leaf trees.
Head to the park’s eastern edges and look out onto Darwin Harbour. In the distance, the Larrakeyah Army Base stretches out towards Darwin’s most eastern point. Along the promenade, look for the 200 Remarkable Territorians display with hand-painted tiles that commemorate pioneers, politicians and scientists from the area.
Bicentennial Park’s historic significance is reflected in the number of monuments located throughout. Stop by a defensive cannon post, which displays the original weapon intact. Visit the Cenotaph Memorial in the southwestern end of the park. This monument commemorates the efforts of Australians who served in war and the Aboriginal people whose bush skills were essential to the successful defence of Darwin during World War II.
Get some exercise with a jog or a footy game on the lawns. Take the kids to the playground for a ride on the swings. The park is a popular setting for wedding photos, so chances are you will spot a procession passing by.
Time your visit during the Darwin Festival in August to enjoy music performances, food stalls and dance shows throughout the park. In June, get a glimpse of Darwin’s lively Greek community at the Greek Glenti festival.
Bicentennial Park is located next to Darwin’s city centre, along the Esplanade. Get there using Darwin’s efficient bus system or walk from downtown.
