New Farm Park
Watch the kids climb enormous fig trees and run around the playground or stroll through the rose garden and enjoy the view.
New Farm Park is a 37-acre (15-hectare) parkland and houses a cultural center, playgrounds, markets, beautifully landscaped gardens and plenty of green space where you can sit back and relax.
In the early 19th century the site was a farm for a newly established convict settlement, but it later became a racecourse and eventually a public park.
Wander the grounds and admire the colorful jacarandas or sit on a bench and enjoy the view of the city skyline. Pack a picnic and find yourself a comfortable spot down near the riverside or beneath a shady tree. There are barbecue areas all around the park, as well as plenty of space for anyone looking to jog or play.
Kids will love the enormous playground. It takes the shape of a small fort spread around the bases of several sprawling fig trees. There are several sets of swings and other play equipment, as well as separate areas for younger kids. Spot the giant dragon sculptures dotted about the area.
Sports fans are free to kick a ball on the soccer field or can book one of the tennis courts for a game. When the sun starts to go down, head to the Brisbane Powerhouse near the river for drinks or a meal. Pick up a program to see if there’s a show or musical performance on during your visit.
Visit New Farm park on the second or fourth Saturday of the month for the excellent farmers’ markets near the Powerhouse building. The markets offer fresh tropical fruit, gourmet meats, flowers and crafts.
New Farm Park is in the suburb of New Farm, about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) from downtown. There’s free parking, but it’s also easily accessible by ferry and a bus stop is nearby. You can access the park at any time of the day or night. Admission is free, although you have to book ahead and pay for the tennis court.
