Glass House Mountains

Like sleeping giants, the dormant volcanic plugs that are the Glass House Mountains rise from the forested Sunshine Coast hinterland.

Their craggy peaks are a magnet for rock climbers, but we’ll let you in on a secret: there are easier paths that lead to the tops of the Glass House Mountains as well. Hidden caves and sprawling vistas only add to the mystical appeal of this region. ‘Glasshouse’ as the locals call their township, has some shops and historic attractions. From there it’s just a short drive to the popular Australia Zoo, managed by the world-famous Irwin family.

What you need to know about Glass House Mountains

What to Pack

If you're planning on hiking the Glass House Mountains, remember that the weather can change suddenly and you will be exposed to sun, rain and wind at the top. Bring:

  • A hat, sunscreen and a long-sleeved shirt or light jacket, along with plenty of water.
  • Rock climbing shoes or good trainers with anti-slip soles for more grip on those steep slopes.
  • Your smartphone: The views from the various lookouts and summit trails are totally worth sharing.
Getting Around

The best way to get around is by car. Enjoy the scenery along Steve Irwin Drive and stop at fruit farms and popular hiking spots. Some highlights are just 15 minutes from the car parks, others take hours to get to on foot. You won't need a 4WD, but if you have one you can get really off the beaten path here. Trains run between Brisbane and the Glasshouse Mountains station on the Nambour/Gympie North line.

Best time to Visit

Every season comes with ups and downs, depending on what you want to do, but all are good times to visit. It's only when it rains that it may stop you from enjoying the Glass House Mountains, because the steep slopes can get very slippery and the views out over the craggy peaks and towards the coast will be less impressive. Australia Zoo is always good, in winter and summer.
