Australian Centre for the Moving Image
Lovers of classic cinema, budding film makers and avid gamers will all delight in one of the world’s leading moving image museums.
The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) is dedicated to the preservation, promotion and exhibition of all forms of the moving image, including film, television and digital technology. The ACMI also features internationally renowned facilities that are regularly used by artists to produce new content.
The centrepiece of the ACMI is the permanent exhibition Screen Worlds: The Story of Film, Television and Digital Culture. In this highly interactive exhibition, discover how different forms of the moving image have developed and evolved in Australia. The exhibition offers you the opportunity to play vintage video games and to experience cutting-edge digital technology. This is the perfect place to bring hard-to-impress, techno-savvy children. The ACMI plays host to major temporary exhibitions which have, in the past, covered topics such as the history and future of gaming, and costume design in the cinema.
Choose a classic Australian movie or an edgy documentary from the ACMI film program. Or, time your visit to coincide with one of the regular film festivals. Sign up for a digital storytelling or movie-making workshop, or spend the day browsing through a century of archival sound and visual treasures in the Australian Mediatheque. ACMI also features regular presentations with industry insiders.
After you browse the exhibits or see a film, sit down to a meal or snack at the on-site restaurant and bar, open Monday to Friday.
Learn more about what’s on at the center and book tickets at the ACMI’s website. Many of the events are free. There are free guided tours of the Screen Worlds exhibit twice a day. The center is open daily, except Christmas Day.
ACMI is located at Federation Square, just across the road from Flinders Street Station, Melbourne’s main train terminal. The center is also easily accessible by tram, bus, boat, bike and car. There is user-pay car parking at Federation Square.
