Floreat Beach
Swim or surf, laze on the soft sands, stroll among the dunes or watch the sun set over the ocean from this serene city beach, just west of Perth’s city centre.
Floreat Beach is a surprisingly clean and quiet beach despite being so close to the city centre of Western Australia’s sprawling capital. City Beach to the south and hugely popular Scarborough Beach to the north usually steal the limelight, so head to Floreat if you’re after a more serene getaway.
Small, vegetated dunes line the beach, giving Floreat Beach a nice natural feel. From there, watch the clear waters of the Indian Ocean roll onto the white sands of Floreat Beach. Check out the surf club, kiosk and green space on the southern end of the beach, a laid-back coastal hub where you could hang out all day.
Dig your toes in the soft, white sand as you stroll along the beach or follow the boardwalk that runs through the dunes to City Beach.
On a hot day, wade into the clear waters to cool off. Watch out for waves and rip currents, which can catch less experienced ocean swimmers unaware. The volunteers of the Floreat Beach Surf Life Saving Club usually patrol the beach, keeping an eye on everyone, so swim between their flags to be safe.
After your swim, lay down on the warm sands of the gently sloping beach and let the soothing sound of the waves lull you into a state of mindfulness.
If you’re after an adrenaline buzz, grab your surfboard and head out on to the water. The surf breaks near the rock wall on the northern end of the 2.5-kilometre (1.5-mile) beach attract the more experienced surfers. Kitesurfers make the most of the coastal breezes that pick up in the afternoon.
Grab something to eat near the surf club or bring your own picnic or barbecue supplies. Shaded picnic tables and free barbecues are supplied in the small park, along with a playground to keep the kids happy.
As the sun sinks down in the Indian Ocean, the sky takes on a burst of colours. The sunset views out to Rottnest Island are stunning at this time of day.
Floreat Beach is best reached by car or bus. Free public car parks are dotted along the beach. Toilet and shower facilities are provided.
