Old Mill
Enjoy the history of this site in the center of Perth, which provides a cozy and nostalgic reminder of Australia’s farming past.
Visit the historic old mill, an iconic monument in Perth. Its distinct white exterior and egg-shaped body makes it stand out from the parks and skyscrapers surrounding the Swan River. Take an hour or so to enjoy its scenic location on the Mill Point peninsula and learn more about the heritage of Western Australian farming.
Commissioned by William Kernot Shenton in 1835, the Old Mill is also called Shenton’s Mill. The heritage building has survived the transformation of Perth into a modern city. Come to learn of its stories and its quirks, such as the fact that its exterior was fortified to withstand attacks from indigenous tribes. Though flour has not been produced here since the introduction of more profitable flour processing in 1859, it is one of Perth’s most beloved historic icons.
Take an informative tour of the building to learn about its story; the use of Swan River as an avenue for flour transport and the tough lives of early settlers. Enter the building to see some historic artifacts from the days of colonization. Architecture enthusiasts will enjoy its distinct early colonial design.
After learning about its history, explore the Old Mill’s surroundings with a pleasant walk around the tip of the Mill Point peninsula. Grab some coffee or lunch along the shores of the Swan River and bask in the warm Western Australian sun. At night you can go to see a performance at the Old Mill Theatre.
The Old Mill is located in South Perth at the foot of the Narrows Bridge, which connects the peninsula with the city center. Drive or cycle over the bridge or catch a ferry from the Barrack Street Jetty under the Swan Bell Tower to the peninsula and look back to get a stunning view of the city skyline.
Entry to the Old Mill is by donation and the surrounding land is a public park. The site is open daily for limited hours, but closed on Mondays and public holidays. Call ahead to book a tour of the Old Mill, held four days a week.
