Legian Beach
Surfers and holidaymakers flock to this beach to enjoy excellent swells, a laid-back nightlife and picturesque sunsets away from Kuta’s main drag.
Legian Beach is an island paradise with soft white sand and clear, warm water. Lie back on a day bed or get active in the surf away from the massive crowds of nearby Kuta Beach.
Walk some of the length of the 3-kilometre (1.8-mile) beach and feel the soft sand between your toes. Legian is ideal for sunbathing and surfing, although there are safer swimming beaches in Bali that are more suitable for children. The waves here are powerful and the swells long, but the ocean’s soft sandy bottom and consistent waves makes it perfect for learning how to surf. Hire a board or sign up for lessons from a surf school.
One of the most popular activities on Legian Beach is to do nothing at all. Lie on the sand with a book and spend the day relaxing. If you want to get active, walk 10 minutes north to Seminyak Beach or south to Kuta. You’ll see luxury resorts lining the beach alongside restaurants and cafés. Stop for a cocktail or snack on traditional Balinese seafood and rice dishes.
Come back to Legian Beach after dark to play football and beach volleyball. Sip cold beers as you listen to live music. The party scene here is more laidback than the nightclubs in Kuta.
The best time to come to Legian Beach is between May and October. This is when the surfing conditions are best because the weather is dry and the wind blows from east to west. Hire surfboards, shade umbrellas and lounge chairs from vendors along the beachfront. You’ll also find public showers and bathrooms here.
Legian Beach is 20 minutes by car or taxi from Ngurah Rai International Airport. Stay in Kuta or Seminyak and walk to Legian to avoid the traffic jams that clog the surrounding roads. The walk is only 10 minutes from either beach. Many visitors choose to come by motorbike and park along the beachfront.
