Brooklands Zoo
Spend some time at this delightful family-focused zoo, enjoy a picnic lunch in a welcoming setting and learn about animals from around the world.
Discover the joys of the animal kingdom at Brooklands Zoo, a favorite destination for locals and tourists alike. Aimed at families and staffed by friendly and dedicated zookeepers, it is an excellent place to enjoy a leisurely morning or afternoon. Mingle with many different species of colorful birds in the free-flight aviary, marvel at the bizarre behavior of the monkeys and get close to feathered and furry barnyard animals.
While the zoo is quite small, it has all the animals you need to keep children of all ages entertained for hours. Watch their eyes light up when they see the meerkats, alpacas, llamas and lizards. Get a 360-degree view of the playful otters via the boardwalk around their enclosure and admire the inquisitive and highly intelligent capuchin from the nearby viewing area. Let the kids take a break from the animals and use some energy on the large playground in the middle of the zoo.
Since opening in 1965, the zoo has maintained a focus on conservation, biodiversity and education. Learn with your children about the animals, their unique habitats and the zoo’s efforts to restore their natural environments and promote diverse ecosystems. Make a group booking in advance via New Plymouth’s tourism website to participate in educational zookeeper talks and short tours of the zoo.
Bring food with you and enjoy a picnic lunch on the lawn or on the limited seating available, but make sure not to feed any of the animals. If you feel like enjoying more time outdoors after you have finished at the zoo, visit the Bowl of Brooklands, a unique outdoor venue in a natural grass amphitheater that is just a short walk away through Pukekura Park.
Brooklands Zoo is open daily and has no admission fee. Facilities include wheelchair and pushchair access, a playground and picnic tables. Walk here easily from New Plymouth’s city center through Pukekura Park.
