The Coromandel Arts & Culture

The world rushes ahead, but not the Coromandel. This North Island peninsula has its own way of doing things. Here, the focus is on nature, not consumerism. That means more space for creativity to run wild.

The simple life on the peninsula has a way of attracting artists. The Coromandel's natural beauty doesn't hurt, either. The craggy cliffs and pristine beaches inspire hundreds of local artists every day.

Artists aren't the only ones drawn to the beaches. With some of New Zealand's best surf breaks, the region has a vibrant surfing culture. Surf and music lovers flock to Whangamata for the Beach Hop, an annual music festival.

Craft Trails

  • If your favourite type of sightseeing is the artsy sort, you're in luck. The galleries showcase sculptures, paintings, arts and crafts by local artists.
  • Mercury Bay Art Escape hosts the region's largest arts tour each March. If you can't visit in March, many studios will open their doors by appointment.
  • The region is peppered with craft trails. These cool tours allow you to watch the artists at work in their studios.

Heritage

  • A taste of culture is good for the soul. Head to the Coromandel to experience the unique local events.
  • Are you a history buff? Dive into the local history on a walking trail. The Coromandel has a rich heritage as a gold mining region. Mining relics can still be found in the surrounding area.
  • Back in town, there are museums and a discovery centre to explore.

Surf Culture

  • With some of New Zealand's best surf breaks, the surf culture is alive and well in the Coromandel.
  • Each March, the Whangamata Beach hosts the Beach Hop, a laid-back music festival on the sand.
  • Planning a trip? The surf is at its peak in the summer, so you're sure to find a scene to settle in to.
