Taupō Water Activities

Take the plunge or stay high and dry. Either way there's no escaping the wonderful watery landscape that characterizes the Taupō region.

Of all the amazing things to do in Taupō-and there are a bucketload of them-you'll often find that water plays a key role. Swimming and watersports are the obvious water activities; even these take on a new dimension when you do them in crystal clear lakes. There are some other surprising activities too.

From world-class trout fishing in rivers, lakes and sea to harnessing your inner goddess in natural thermal pools, Taupō has some pretty cool stuff up its sleeve. Cling to jet boats, relax on sailing boats and don't forget the plethora of windsurfers, kayaks, paddleboards and waterskis to try. All of this happens in the midst of some of the most astounding natural scenery on the planet.

Fishing

  • Trout fly fishing doesn't get much better than along the Tongariro River. Base yourself in Turangi, the gateway to Tongariro National Park, home to every fishing amenity you could need.
  • Brown and rainbow trout thrive in the clear waters of Lake Taupō, creating world-class fishing year-round. Hire a guide to discover the best secret spots.
  • Budding young anglers will delight in the Tongariro National Trout Centre and hatchery in Turangi, where they can have a go at grown-up fishing in the trout pond.

Water Sports

  • Paddle serenely down the Waitomo River, the longest in New Zealand, as you gaze in awe and at the beautiful surroundings and give a peaceful sigh.
  • If you're planning a trip to Taupō, you'll be pleased to know there are few watersports you can't do on the great lake. Windsurfing, waterskiing, wakeboarding...you name it.
  • Brace yourself. You're in for a white-knuckle ride as you white water raft the mighty frothing waters of the Tongariro River.

Relaxing Water Activities

  • It's not all about adrenaline in Taupō. Paddle boarding is a wonderfully Zen activity. Head out onto one of the region's lakes for scenery and serenity.
  • Treat aching muscles to a day of luxury at the Waikato River at Spa Thermal Park. Submerge yourself in the Otumuheke Stream's hot thermal waters.
  • Take a deep breath and plunge into Lake Taupō's cool waters for an invigorating swim. Summer is the warmest, but if you're very brave, try a wintry dip. It makes for a good story.
