Things To Do with Kids in Wellington

New Zealand's capital has stacks of things to do with kids. On the Wellington Waterfront alone, you'll find a long list of family experiences. Try Wellington Museum, Capital E, Frank Kitts Park, beaches, bikes and, most importantly, gelato.

  • The Wellington Museum is always a kid favourite. Learn all about Wellington's maritime history through fun interactive exhibits.
  • Do your kids have a thing for outer space? Don't miss Space Place, a science centre with multimedia exhibits and a full-dome planetarium.
  • The Capital E children's centre is home to an epic playground with games and cool activities. Check the schedule to see live performances and participate in special workshops.

Parks and Zoos

  • Kids can't get enough of the Wellington Zoo. Don't miss the Close Encounters exhibits, where you can interact with giraffes, red pandas and more.
  • Frank Kitts Park is famous for its enormous lighthouse slide. Kids will love watching the helicopters take off from nearby.
  • Freyberg Beach Playground has an awesome rope climbing course and a miniature beach. With pretty waterfront views, it's a perfect place for a picnic, too.

Adventure Activities

  • Take a ride on the iconic Cable Car to the Kelburn Lookout. At the top, pop into the Cable Car Museum.
  • Take the ferry to Days Bay to see New Zealand's first lighthouse. For even more fun, rent an electric bike and zip around the pretty bay.
  • Get up-close and personal with New Zealand's fur seals. On the Seal Coast Safari, you'll drive in a 'seal mobile' on the beach and walk among the seals in the waves.
