Riverwalk
Discover a scenic strip of parkland, shops and historic buildings in the center of the city.
The Riverwalk is an area along the north and south banks of the New River in downtown Fort Lauderdale. It’s home to several of the city’s main attractions, including the Museum of Discovery and Science, the Broward Center for Performing Arts and Old Fort Lauderdale.
The historic waterfront area was the original settlement in Fort Lauderdale, and some of the early architecture remains. Today you’ll also find luxury yachts in the marina and lining the river.
Spend a day strolling along the paved walkways, which run for roughly a mile (1.6 kilometers) and make the area easy to navigate. Stop at one of several historic attractions, such as the 1907 King-Cromartie House or the 1899 Replica Schoolhouse. The 1905 New River Inn is the oldest surviving hotel in Broward County. The Stranahan House Museum once served as the town hall and post office, and was built by the founder of the city, Frank Stranahan, in 1901. Tours through the house are held every day of the year, except public holidays.
Jump on a tour boat and take a cruise down the New River. Dozens of tour companies operate river cruises, many of them leaving from the marina or Los Olas riverfront. You’ll see expensive yachts and pricey real estate; Sonny and Cher, and Lucille Ball—among other celebrities — have lived in the posh mansions that line the river.
Hit the shops to pick up souvenirs, clothing from luxury brands, art works and home wares. On the fourth Sunday of the month, spend an afternoon browsing the work of local artists at the Riverwalk Sunday Arts event. In the evening, take a seat just steps from the water at one of the themed bars and restaurants The walkways are well lit at night and filled with revelers who hop between bars.
The Riverwalk is located downtown on a number of city bus routes, and parking is available nearby if you opt to drive.
