Accommodation In Lijiang

Lijiang is a mountainous part of China with an interesting history, because the dominant ethnic group was a matriarchal society where women ruled! Come and learn about the heritage of the people from this area, enjoy the best view in China and have an authentic local experience on your next vacation. Have a look at our Lijiang hotels and start planning your next holiday today!

The old town is the heart of the city, so head to a local cafe and watch the people socialize, shop, drink and eat. If you make it by 7pm you'll be there in time for a bonfire in the central plaza, where the locals will happily show you the steps of their traditional dance. The Mu Palace is spectacular, and the home of the Naxi people who ruled the region for over four hundred years. The palace has many beautiful paintings to admire before you climb to the Daoist Temple and receive your fortune. Try a glass of the local Mulaoye wine, and explore the peaceful, serene courtyards and gardens.

You can't miss the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain that towers over the city. The peaks that soar into the heavens are capped with snow all year round, so start walking up to Black Dragon Pool to get a photo of the best view in China. The buildings here are all traditional, and the central bridge with the mountain behind has the most incredible of the views. Follow the path to Tiger Leaping Gorge, and stop in at the Dong Ba Valley Cultural Centre. Here you can see entertainers performing for the tourists, as well as showing scenes from everyday village life. If you're feeling energetic you can continue hiking up to Elephant Hill, or simply stop in at one of the great cafes nearby and enjoy the view.

Just outside of the city you can visit the Baisha Naxi Embroidery Institute, which aims to keep the spirit and traditions of the local embroidery alive. They will happily teach you how to weave, or you can show your support and buy some ornate items from their gift shop. By comparison, the Dong Ba Cultural Institute takes a more technical approach, and is great to visit if you want to learn more details about the Naxi culture.

The Naxi Orchestra puts on a fantastic show if you can catch a session while you're in town, or float a boat down the waterway with a lit candle to make a wish. If you're feeling energetic rent a bike and explore the three villages just outside of town. All three are delightfully local, and offer a rare insight into traditional Chinese life. Go hiking at Yak Meadow, where you can see grazing yaks, a peaceful Tibetan temple and a number of different trails that wind away into the forest.
