Lake Wakatipu
Set against a snowy mountain backdrop, this lightning bolt-shaped lake wows with stunning views in all directions.
Lake Wakatipu is New Zealand’s longest lake. Māori legend says that a giant spirit called Matau slumbers at the bottom of Lake Wakatipu, his beating heart causing the unusual “tidal” effect observed in the inland lake. Wakatipu sure seems to pump heaps of energy into New Zealand’s Adventure Capital, Queenstown, hugging its shore. Hop on a steamship to take it all in slowly or jump in a jet boat to make the dare-devilish locals proud.
