Not a 5-star. Being very gentle is a 3-star
The staff is incredible, extremely helpful. But the condition of the hotel is deteriorating and maintenance hasn’t picked up. The breakfast is expensive and lacks lighter options, as I am not a fan of greasy food such as the full English breakfast. The water temperature in the outside pool is perfect, and everything in the spa is very pleasant, but again, lacks maintenance.

Mixed review on service... 1st day we arrived and ordered room service, they tried to hide a £10 service charge, they removed it after we complained so be careful. Apart from that, the services we got from the waiters and waitresses was fantastic... we came for a wedding so don't know if the service we got from those really lovely waiting gang was a one off, I hope not. Lovely gardens and great car park close to reception too.

Has potential but needs some TLC.
Lovely building but needs renovating. Room had moths and was near banging doors, so I moved room. That room also had moths and look old and tired. Although the aspect over the garden was nice and had the evening sun. 2nd room much more spacious. Bathroom needs renovating, looked old. Bed was really uncomfortable, too soft and bouncy, felt like an old mattress with the topper on. Staff were really helpful and polite. My order at breakfast wrong but they were quick to amend. Breakfast was pretty good but the coffee tasted like instant (but served in a caftiere) . Thought the rooms were overpriced (£180 for 1 inc. breakfast, mid-week) for the quality of the hotel. Setting is nice and not too far into town. Can join canal for nice walk to Bath Skyline. Overall stay was good

Constructive Criticism
Dining room lets the hotel down. The Maitre d’ on Monday night was excellent but other staff did not know how to serve people correctly eg leaning over people at the table, second coffee didn’t appear, plates taken before all table had finished etc. Lady in reception Wii checked us in and out was very efficient and made us welcome.

Incredibly disappointing. Long queues for the check in and restaurant. Concierge not very informed and not helpful. Facilities are incredibly old and you can even feel it in the air (carpets smell, aged stoned, etc). I don’t think I’d call this a 4 star hotel, let alone a 5 star hotel. Our room was somehow 10 degrees higher than the very pleasant weather outside. We couldn’t crack open a window and the AC was not working. When I informed the front desk their solve was to bring us this tiny fan. Not to give us a different room or attempt to fix it. Breakfast was also a huge disappointment. The buffet was mostly out so they took out a la carte orders. They asked if we wanted a latte before seeing the menu and after we ordered we realized it was a £4 pound surcharge! That’s more expensive than getting it at a cafe. What a bizarre thing to do. I also asked for a poached egg and ice several times and never received either. Grounds are beautiful but wow everything else was a massive fail.

The staff were friendly and the hotel is well kept. It is situated on a hill and offers a quiet place to relax after a busy day. It is close to the Kennet and Avon canal, Sydney Gardens and it’s a pleasant walk into city along Great Pulteney Street and over Pulteney Bridge. Unlike most city centre hotels it does have a car park.

An outstanding SPA hotel with heavenly gardens
Choosing the MacDonald Spa Hotel was the best decision of our vacation! We visited Bath for two days, and despite some mixed reviews, we were drawn by the hotel's outdoor spa pool and its proximity to the city center— a 15-minute walk through beautiful gardens. Taking this 'risk' turned out to be a delightful surprise! Room and Ambience: The rooms were nothing short of spectacular, spacious interiors with 5-meter high ceilings and large windows that allowed us to watch the sky from our beds—an experience that's hard to forget. Gardens and Pool: The hotel's garden was immaculately maintained, historic trees over 200 years old that added to the overall serenity. The outdoor pool, although small, was equipped with water massage features. Location and Accessibility: The walk to the city center was a highlight, offering a scenic route that passed through the hotel's own well maintained gardens and the famous Sydney Gardens. For convenience, we opted for a quick £6 Uber ride back to the hotel in the evening. The free parking at the hotel was also a major plus. Dining Experience: The breakfast room matched the elegance of the rest of the hotel with its high ceilings and expansive windows. The buffet offered a good variety, and while special menu items like Eggs Royal were extra. I've attached photos to this review—something I don't usually do—but this hotel truly deserves it. Highly recommend it for a peaceful stay.
A great room with 5m high ceilings and a four poster bed.

The bedroom furniture looks like it has been up cycled from a charity shop, the shower dripped all night, the enamel had gone on the bath leaving it dirty looking, we had £6 charge added to each order at the bar despite us going up to the bar ourselves and not getting any table service & and when ordering bar food we were asked to eat it outside of the bar for some reason and there was a charge for it, far from being a 5* hotel, a lovely building & surroundings but in need of a major overhaul, the service charges were certainly 5*
