Apart from the Hotel Grand York asked for reserving 50 GBP in a credit card (on which didn't release this blocking yet even after 2 weeks pass by, the hotel is good in terms of hospitality. The luggage storage is professional. The location is very good (in a walking distance from the train station and major attractions).

This is a beautiful hotel in a historic building has been attractively (albeit, slightly confusingly) extended with a modern “executive” wing. Sandra on reception when we arrived were warm and polite. We were offered a room in the new wing for an additional £40. I wish we had not bothered - the “view” was predominantly of an ugly rooves and air conditioning units. The beds were also hard as rocks - I did not sleep well. When I mentioned this the next morning to reception they didn’t make any effort to fix it or even apologise. Our room didn’t get serviced either - I had to call for this to be done. For nearly £230 a night - I expected far better. When I booked in a session at the spa, they neglected to tell me there would be a lifesaving lesson taking place in the pool. Cue a man screaming instructions to people in the pool in the very small spa area, so you could hear it everywhere, including in the sauna and stream rooms. Not relaxing at all. I passed this back at check out - a very half-hearted “sorry” - the reception staff didn’t look surprised. The last point was that it took nearly a week for them to refund the £100 hold they put on my card. When I called to enquire about it, I was given short shrift and patronisingly told that “in the UK it can take up to 5 working days for a refund”. Yes, I have an accent, but I’ve lived in the UK for 23 years, so I know it’s possible for things to move more quickly than that. I’ll be staying elsewhere in York next time.

As the only 5 star hotel in York. There is a level of service and accommodation you expect. The Grand exceeded all of these expectations from the start of your stay the porter bringing your luggage to your room. All staff are friendly and knowledgeable always a smile on their faces. The 1906 bar is amazing so much choice drinks wise and the comfiest chairs. The rise restaurant for breakfast or dinner is delectable good vegan choices as well.
