The staff went to great lengths to make NYE fun and memorable. But the amount of plastic at breakfast and evening drinks was shocking. It would not be difficult to replace much of it with paper utensils.

This is truly an old world type property. I love the feel of history in this place. It reminds me of a Merchant-Ivory production. This is the second time I have stayed here. The first time, we had a suite, a mini apartment, better than many. This time I opted for a single room which was very comfortable. The hotel is very cosmopolitan. Every day we witnessed groups from different countries. Sitting in the salon, either during breakfast or during the afternoon, one has the opportunity to meet fellow travelers. Some have been coming to this establishment for years. That is part of the charm. However, being such an old establishment, it is a bit dated. The HVAC system is still a radiator and open windows. Being San Francisco, this wasn't much of a problem. The bathroom, while clean and functional was indire need of a full retrofit. But, yes, I would stay here again. I'm that much of a history buff and a Merchant-Ivory fan.

the people who are working here don’t care: the front desk staff are rude, the housekeepers keep talking loudly in hallways even at 6an in the morning. You have to keep asking staff to attend to the breakfast area to replenish things…

Best check-in clerk ever. But no help with luggage 😍. Loved historical building. Neighborhood not best but I n daughters walked to mall after dark and had no problem with the people. They offer a continental breakfast. And wine n cheese at 4pm. One problem. They offer valet parking, but don't tell it's $45 a day. In my case my daughter had gotten the keys already, so I refused to pay.

Hotel is old, but elegant and well maintained. Room was made up every day; you don't see that very often anymore! Breakfast and afternoon snack ("wine and cheese") are minimalist but acceptable. Heat is via vintage radiators and you have no control other than "off" or "full blast." Room was generally cool in November, but they provided us a small electric space heater to help. You will hear sirens at night from fire and police vehicles; be sure to bring or buy earplugs.
